Fascinated with nature and chaos, Jallen invites the viewer to explore her work and interpret the visual language of form, colour, and line. She uses a process of addition and subtraction of paint to create her layered artwork. This results in an outcome that feels both natural and abstract. In her latest and, to date, most popular series, Nymphadielia, the beauty of the butterfly and moth is tempered by a distressed rawness. This piece is part of Samantha Williams-Chapelsky’s new collection West Coast Wanderings, a series of semi-abstract paintings depicting scenes from all over British Columbia. The artist said, “My landscapes employ impressionistic mark-making to harness the emotions I want to capture in all of these pieces.” Based on her travels through B.C. from the interior to the coast, she created small-scale plein air paintings along the way to capture different moments.
